World War One diary [manuscript]. 1915-1919.

Diary written by George Haines on board troopship, in England and France, and during voyage home, 12 Spetember 1915-26 March 1919. Describes voyage on the "Nestor" which left Port Melbourne on 11 September 1915, experiences fighting on the Somme, being wounded on 10 October 1918, time spent in hospital in Northampton, England until 19 December 1918, and voyage home beginning on 16 March 1919.

George Gutteridge (or Guthridge) Haines (no. 5558) enlisted on 10 July 1915, served as a gunner with the 13th Field Artillery Brigade, and was repatriated to Australia on 16 March 1919. Born in Allandale, Vic. in 1895, he was the son of Christopher Haines and wife Minnie (nee Croy). He married Alexandria May Mott in 1924 and died in East Melbourne in 1940.
